Choral Scholarships at Llandaff Cathedral
The Dean and Chapter are delighted to announce that, from September 2021 (or as soon after that as possible), Llandaff Cathedral is establishing three Choral Scholarships: one each of Alto (Male or Female), Tenor and Bass voices. The purpose of the Choral Scholar scheme is to encourage young singers to become part of the longstanding tradition of Cathedral Music, which is such an important part of our national musical heritage. It is hoped to attract a broad range of singers from different backgrounds, and to introduce and extend the opportunity offered to young musicians in this very special form of music making. Choral Scholarships will be offered following an audition and interview process.
Applicants should be excellent singers with some proven experience of choral singing. The ability to sight-read music confidently is essential, as is a good musical ear and sense of musicianship. Suitable candidates may be in full time education or looking for either gap-year or post-graduate experience and should be good at working alongside others in a team.
Llandaff Cathedral’s Director of Music, Stephen Moore, is looking forward to this new venture. He said:
“I am really excited that we are establishing Choral Scholarships within the Cathedral Choir. Schemes such as this are hugely important in providing opportunities for young musicians to gain experience and to develop professional-level skills. The new Scholars will take an integral role in the development of the Cathedral music department as we expand over the next academic year and I’m looking forward to strengthening the Cathedral’s links with educational establishments across the city of Cardiff.”
