Visting the Cathedral

For some time, the Cathedral has welcomed dog-owners to bring their well-behaved pet, on a lead, into the Cathedral during visiting hours. The owner must be confident that the dog is good around people, especially children, and will not be inclined to urinate or foul inside the building.

Attendance at Services and Events

The presence of dogs at Services or Events is more complex. External hirers may have their own policies, and many events will not be suitable for animals, in terms of amplification, lighting or crowds. The Cathedral is also mindful of its core purpose during worship and its welcome to a variety of people attending services. Some will be dog-owners, and dogs are known to be present during services, but not all participants will share the same opinion about this or be comfortable around dogs for a variety of reasons.

It is therefore incumbent on the dog owner to be respectful of those who have purchased tickets for events or are attending the Cathedral for worship. In the event of any difficulty, requests by staff or stewards, who need to considerately manage a range of expectations, should always be adhered to politely.

The 9am All-Age Eucharist on Sunday is attended by large numbers of young and small children and, therefore, we would not recommend the presence of pets.

Guide dogs and assistance dogs

Guide dogs and assistance dogs play a crucial role in supporting individuals and are always welcome.

Leads and Picking-Up

It is a requirement that dogs are kept on a lead in the Cathedral, in the Cathedral precinct, and in the cemetery. Dogs should never be allowed to use the green area outside Prebendal House for toileting, as Sunday School children often use this area. Owners must always clear-up after their dog immediately.

We look forward to seeing you!

To date, we have had very few issues with dogs in and around the Cathedral and, happily, we see no reason why this should not continue. If you have a particular request or concern, please contact the Cathedral Office at [email protected]
