Applications for Chorister places are now open for boys and girls in year 3.
Application Deadline: Friday 27th February
Audition Date: Saturday 14th March
Becoming a chorister is a life-changing opportunity. Choristers develop confidence, discipline, and teamwork, form friendships for life, and discover a love of music that will stay with them forever.
Choristers receive an outstanding all-round education at The Cathedral School, Llandaff, alongside the unique privilege of singing regularly in the beautiful and inspiring setting of Llandaff Cathedral. This special partnership, unique in Wales, allows children to combine academic excellence with a first-class musical education. Choristers benefit from a substantial reduction in school fees.
In addition to daily rehearsals and services, choristers take part in recordings, broadcasts, and special events, and have opportunities to tour in the UK and internationally. Working closely with professional musicians, children develop valuable life skills such as self-discipline, focus, resilience, and organisation.
Chorister life offers an exceptional musical and educational experience that shapes confident, capable young people.

The Audition
During an audition, our musicians are not necessarily looking for strong musical skills in a candidate, but rather for potential and enthusiasm.
Auditions for Chorister places have 3 parts:
Prepared Songs – In the first section of the audition, you will be asked to perform one prepared song of your own choice, and a verse of the hymn ‘Tell out, my soul’.
Tests
Once you have sung your songs, Mr Moore will guide you through a series of aural tests. The first of these will involve singing some simple exercises to see how high and low you can sing. Further tests will involve singing notes back that you hear on the piano, repeating melodies and clapping rhythms.
Reading
Following the tests, you will be asked to read a short portion of a text from the bible. This might not seem relevant, but choristers spend much of their time singing music with words taken from scripture.
There will also be an opportunity for you to play a piece on an instrument if you have brought one with you.
