Chief Executive/Chapter Clerk Appointed
Appointment of Chief Executive/Chapter Clerk
The Dean and Chapter of Llandaff Cathedral is delighted to announce the appointment of Richard Bacon as their new Chapter Clerk and the Cathedral’s first Chief Executive Officer.
Richard will be responsible for the lay administration, non-liturgical governance and day-to-day operations of the Cathedral. Under the Chapter’s leadership, as Chief Executive and Chapter Clerk, he will lead, develop and drive the implementation of the Cathedral’s strategic agenda, relieving the Cathedral Clergy of much of the burden of administration and day-to-day operational work. As Chapter Clerk, Richard will be the senior administrator in the Cathedral, supporting Chapter’s work and being responsible for matters of statutory compliance and governance.
Richard is married to Joanna with three children in their 20’s, and describes himself as having been “a Cathedral musician full and part-time since the age of 8”! As a partner at Pricewaterhouse-Coopers, Richard has for many years advised the church, universities and not-for-profit organisations on finance and governance at national and local level. Richard retired from PwC three years ago. He is currently a university and school governor and chair of an audit committee. He is also member of the Bristol Diocesan Board of Finance and chairs the Bristol Cathedral Choral Foundation.
Richard Bacon is no stranger to Llandaff, having served as a Trustee of the Cathedral for two years until May 2021. On being appointed, Richard said:
“It has been a great privilege to oversee the Cathedral’s finances through the pandemic thus far as a co-opted member of Chapter. I am looking forward to working with Dean and Chapter, clergy, staff and congregation in fashioning the way ahead at a very exciting time for the Cathedral, in its own community and in the Diocese.”
Simon Lloyd, Provincial Secretary of the Church in Wales, said,
“The Representative Body is committed to supporting the six Cathedrals of the Church in Wales and has recently agreed additional financial support for them. I welcome the appointment of a Chief Executive Officer and Chapter Clerk at Llandaff and look forward to working with him.”
The Cathedral Chapter looks forward to welcoming Richard:
“Richard brings a wealth of experience to his new role in Llandaff ……… after a thorough and rigorous selection process, Richard emerged as the best of a very strong set of applicants for the post. We are looking forward enormously to working with him in shaping the life of the Cathedral in the coming years.”
Richard will take up his duties formally in September 2021 but will be spending some time in Llandaff over the coming weeks to prepare for his new post.
