#turnwalesred Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal

28th October 2016 by llandaff

Llandaff Cathedral is taking part in The Royal British Legion in Wales Annual Poppy Appeal by turning the Cathedral red for the next two weeks until Remembrance Sunday on November 13.

The Poppy Appeal 2016 is encouraging the public to ‘rethink Remembrance’ and recognise the sacrifices made across all generations of the British Armed Forces.

The Dean said “We are delighted to partner with the Royal British Legion for the launch of this year’s Poppy Appeal. Llandaff Cathedral is only too well aware of the cost of warfare, having been devastated by a landmine during WW2 and being home to the Welch Regiment memorial chapel. It is important that we continue to remember the true cost of warfare and the great sacrifices made – both in the past and throughout the world today.”

The Cathedral is one many historic sites across the country turning red, to commemorate the centenary this year of the Somme.  Fought between July 1 and November 1, 1916 near the Somme River in France, it was one of the bloodiest military battles in history. On the first day alone, the British suffered more than 57,000 casualties, and by the end of the campaign the lives of more than 1.5 million men were lost. Between 7th and 14th July 1916, the 38th (Welsh) Division paved the way for control of the woodland at Mametz- nearly a mile wide and more than a mile deep – in northern France. Its capture was of key importance in the Battle of the Somme where Allied forces would fight the Germans on a 15-mile front for five months. During the bloody five-day battle 3,993 Welsh soldiers were killed, missing or injured.
The Welsh launch aims to commemorate these brave men that were lost during the Somme.dscf4174

Repairing of the Colours at Llandaff Cathedral

26th August 2016 by iamp

A number of the Colours at the Cathedral were recently taken down for repair in an attempt to preserve their natural life as long as possible out of respect for the sacrifice and service to country that they represent. The photographs demonstrate some of the stages in this painstaking process of repair and renovation.  fixingcoloursThese Colours were presented by HRH The Prince of Wales KG as Colonel-in-Chief, at Cardiff Castle on 29th July 1989.  The occasion was the Tercentenary Parade to commemorate the Raising of Dering’s Regiment of Foot in 1689.  They replace those presented at Cardiff Castle on 11th June 1969.

On the Pike of The Queen’s Colour is a silver replica of the Wreath of Immortelles presented by HM Queen Victoria on 28th July 1880 to mark the gallant conduct of Lieutenants Melvill and Coghill who lost their lives in attempting to save the Queen’s Colour 1/24th after the disaster at Isandlwana and the noble action of B Company 2/24th at Rorke’s Drift during the Anglo-Zulu war in 1879.

These Colours have been carried in Hong Kong, UK, Northern Ireland, Germany, Kosovo and Iraq.

1st August 2016 by llandaff

A National Service of Commemoration was held at Llandaff Cathedral to mark the centenary of the start of the Battle of the Somme.  The service was followed by an overnight vigil where a trench lantern was lit and guarded by service personnel from the Army, Navy and RAF.somme facebook photo cp15                     05

A two-minute silence was then observed before three 105mm light guns from 104 Regiment Royal Artillery fired a 20-gun barrage to simulate the battle and whistles were then sounded by two soldiers dressed in World War 1 uniform.

Our Mission Statement

Llandaff Cathedral is a Christian gathering of the Church in Wales, which is a province of the worldwide Anglican Communion. It is also the seat of the Bishop of Llandaff. The Cathedral is a focus of pilgrimage and spirituality in the Diocese of Llandaff and for the City of Cardiff. Our purpose is therefore to worship God and share the gospel of Jesus Christ.
