Advent and Christmas at the Cathedral Shop
Our Advent Book this year is published by BRF (Bible Reading Fellowship) and written by the Cardiff University Chaplain, Rev Trystan Owain Hughes, who lectures both at the University and at St Michael's College.
Some of you will remember him as a curate in the Parish of Whitchurch not so long ago. Trystan's book, "Real God in the Real World" is a lively and accessible look at the Incarnation, using personal stories and illustrations from popular culture and the arts, as well as daily bible readings. Its starting point is what "the Word made Flesh" means for us and how the first Christmas can still have an impact on our daily lives as we recognize the person of Jesus in the people we meet, the conversations we have, and in nature and the arts - and also in ourselves as we model ourselves on him and share his love and compassion and peace with our neighbour.
Do please take the time to have a look at the variety of Christmas stock - nativity scenes, cribs, tree ornaments, advent calendars and candles, various religious gifts, and our range of jewelry. Christmas cards have been on sale for a few weeks now, and we have calendars of local scenes ready to send to friends and relatives far away.
There are. inexpensive stocking fillers and even books to hang as decorations on the Christmas tree! Introduce a child to the adventures of the Church Cat ( and the hundreds of mice who share them) or to the hilarious rhyming tales about Hairy McClary - the dog from Donaldson's Dairy.
We aim to stock cards and gifts suitable for baptism, confirmation and ordination, as well as birthdays and Christmas. These include jewelry, crosses, paperweights, bookmarks, candles, notelets, etc. Christmas cribs and other seasonal items are also stocked.
The book section has Bibles in English and Welsh and several versions for children. Advent and Lent books are stocked, as well as Christian classics, daily readings and books of prayers.
Gifts for christenings and confirmation include poetry collections, as well as the CS Lewis "Narnia" series which has a strong Christian theme. Books of Welsh interest include a large selection from the publisher "Seren" more and more of whose books by Welsh writers in English are being listed for various literary awards. Seren also publish the popular "Llandaff Cathedral" hardback.
Popular children's books, at competitive prices, include a selection by Roald Dahl who was a pupil at our Cathedral School.
Contributions of good quality 2nd hand books are always welcome - gardens, travel, arts and crafts, history, theology etc. ( as with new books space doesn't allow for fiction.)

Thank you to all of you who have supported the shop this year. As always our volunteer helpers have kept us open day in, day out, and deserve a huge vote of thanks. We also depend on all those members of the congregations who buy cards and gifts so regularly. We couldn't manage solely on what our visitors spend. So a big thank you to all of you too. Profits go towards the upkeep of our much loved building.
New helpers are always needed for 2 hour sessions which can be weekly, fortnightly or monthly, depending on how much time you can spare. (Ring Pam Barlow on 20652519.)
