Dr John R Kenyon, Head Server

It was on Christmas Day in 2003 that John Kenyon assumed the role of Head Server, following the retirement of Terry Lewis. Fourteen years later, the Choral Eucharist on Christmas Day in 2017 became the final service of his tenure.

On Sunday 28 January,  John’s time as Head Server was celebrated with a special Choral Evensong. To mark the occasion, the team of servers he organised so efficiently joined the procession and the choir sang an additional anthem at his request; ‘If Ye Love me’, by Thomas Tallis.

The Dean spoke of his gratitude to John, and his wife Chris, and presented them with a gift for the time they both gave in order to provide the Cathedral with an always reliable team of servers, not just on Sundays but at weekday services as well.

The Virgers in particular are very grateful to John and the service he has given, as he always made life a lot easier for them, particularly at 7am on Sunday mornings! Fortunately John will not be disappearing completely as he will continue to serve for services in the week, but he will now be able to enjoy Sunday mornings from the congregation.
