Installation of Canon Chancellor

Canon Jan takes the Oath of Canonical Obedience before the service.

On Sunday 5th May, during Choral Evensong, Bishop June installed the Reverend Canon Dr Jan van der Lely as the Cathedral’s new Canon Chancellor.

Canon Jan has joined us from the Diocese of Gloucester where she was Vicar of Thornbury and Oldbury with Shepperdine, and we were delighted to welcome many visitors who made the journey from Jan’s former parish to support her as we look forward to her ministry among us.

Jan has been ordained for 10 years and before that was a teacher of Religious Studies, Psychology and Sociology in Secondary Schools in Gloucester and Cheltenham, before becoming lay chaplain to Aiglon College, a British boarding school in Switzerland.

Aside from her work as a Parish Priest, Jan is a trustee of Modern Church, a charity founded in the late 19th century as a theological society aiming to support and develop open, non-dogmatic, thinking theology. The charity has supported developments in the church such as women’s ordination.

The Canon Chancellor writes:

Graham and I would like to thank everyone for a warm welcome to Llandaff where we feel well settled already! You may have heard Bishop June’s sermon at my installation including her description of the Canon Chancellor role, which will be published in the next issue of Majestas. It may sound as if ‘Chancellor’ is a legal or financial role – not me at all! – but thankfully instead it is pastoral and educational.

I look forward to getting to know you all and working with you as we pray together, step forward in our lives of faith and seek to know God and to follow Christ more closely day by day.
