Easter & Mothering Sunday at the Cathedral Shop

12th March 2019 by llandaff

The Cathedral Shop is well-stocked for Lent and Easter as well as Mothering Sunday (March 31st).

Lent Books are now available: “Lent Pilgrim; the Beatitudes” (£2.75) is the Church of England’s official Lent guide, with readings, reflections, prayers and suggestions for action for each of the 40 days (and will be followed by “Easter Pilgrim: The Lord’s Prayer” covering the period from Easter to Ascension Day). Meanwhile, “Reflections for Lent” (£4.99) follows the traditional pattern of reading, reflection and prayer, and is designed to refresh and inspire moments of personal prayer.

Please buy your Mothering Sunday (March 31st) and Easter Cards (April 21st) from our range. All now in stock along with plenty of more general items suitable for gifts and souvenirs. We have a wide selection of jewellery at very reasonable prices, as well as love spoons, books and CDs.

The Cathedral Shop is open Monday to Saturday, 10am to 4pm, and after services on Sundays. It is situated to the right of the West Door, beneath the Pritchard Tower, and is run by a wonderful group of volunteers.

Nine Lessons and Carols

3rd December 2018 by llandaff

The service of Nine Lessons and Carols tells the story of Christmas through a series of readings from the Bible. It begins with the Fall of Humanity and then the earliest promises of Redemption through Jesus the Messiah. It continues highlighting the hopes of the Old Testament prophets until the birth of Christ, as told in the Gospels. As the name of the service implies, the narrative is reinforced through the singing of carols and hymns.

Music during the service:

Hymn: Once in Royal David’s city
Mathias – A babe is born
Vaughan Williams – The truth from above
Manz – E’en so, Lord Jesus
Hymn: Long ago, Prophets knew
Rutti – Tomorrow shall be my dancing day
Hymn: O dawel ddinas Bethlehem
Stopford – There is no rose
Davies – Tua Bethlem dref
Hymn: While shepherds watched
Leighton – O leave your sheep
Hymn: O come, all ye faithful
Hymn: Hark! the herald angels sing

All are welcome to attend.

PLEASE NOTE this service is extremely popular. Doors will open at 2.00pm and it is highly recommended that you arrive early to guarantee entry to the Cathedral.

Messiaen’s ‘La Nativite du Seigneur’

28th November 2018 by llandaff

On Wednesday 19 December at 6.30pm, the Cathedral presents Olivier Messiaen’s ‘La Nativité du Seigneur’ (The Birth of the Saviour), arguably one of the most important organ works of the twentieth century. Its devotional nature is remarkably direct, for Messiaen possessed a deep-rooted faith and theological insight which gave a strongly spiritual dimension to all his work.

The music will be interspersed with biblical readings, making it a special opportunity to experience the Christmas story in an atmospheric setting through words and wonderful music. The organ will be played by the Cathedral’s Director of Music, Stephen Moore, and the recital is free to attend.
