Llandaff Cathedral is the venue for an exciting filming project taking place from the 24th to 28th January.
This new version of Bach’s sacred masterpiece has been commissioned by the Welsh language broadcaster S4C and has been translated and adapted from the original German by the soprano Elin Manahan Thomas, with the support of the author and academic Heini Gruffudd. This is the first time that Bach’s St John Passion has been performed in the Welsh language and the work will be filmed here at Llandaff Cathedral.
The performance will include a specialist Baroque orchestra, a Welsh choir and solo performances from Rhodri Prys Jones as the Evangelist, Jeremy Huw Williams performing the role of Christ, Robert Davies as Pilate, Elin Manahan Thomas herself as the soprano soloist, Eirlys Myfanwy Davies as the mezzo soprano soloist and tenor soloist Gwilym Bowen, all conducted by Huw Williams – the new director of music at Bath Abbey. The production will be directed for television by Hefin Owen.
Rondo Media, an independent production company that specialises in producing classical music events and broadcasts, are filming the performance over 3 days at the Cathedral. The programme itself will be broadcast on S4C during the Easter period this year.
The Cathedral will remain open during this period but there will be restrictions to some areas whilst filming takes place. The Cathedral Shop will be open from 10.00am – 2.00pm during these dates.
