THE CATHEDRAL ORGAN APPEAL
Patron: HRH The Prince of Wales

Progress Report - Eastertide 2008

The Appeal, which was launched at the service last July, has now been running for 9 months.

The Appeal Committee has met regularly every Tuesday for two hours to plan and monitor the Appeal. In addition, much extra work is undertaken by Committee members in their own time.

At the general meeting in January, we were able to give you an idea of how things were progressing -  96 of our Parishioners came along that night. We now feel that the time is right for us to report to everyone as to how we are getting on - only 6 months from when we start paying the organ builders £65,758 every month every month until 2010!

We have raised £410,000 made up as follows:-

£

Anonymous gift for deposit 50,000
Insurance claim     64,000
Weston Corporation 50,000
Friends of the Cathedral    50,000
Gibson Trust 5,000
“One off” donations 138,910
Phased donations by monthly DD/GWADD 28,671
Investment interest 8,995
Fund raising activities 14,463

  410,039

£92,000 of this fund has been spent to date - £61,611 of which was the deposit paid to the Organ builders: the balance being fees, postages and printing and other costs associated with the launch, the Faculty application and the Appeal. This leaves us with £318,000 in hand.

We are finding it very difficult to attract the level of support we need for this Project from outside sources i.e. businesses, grant making funds etc. It is our opinion, backed up by the experience of the St David’s Cathedral project, that the majority of the money will have to come from within our own family i.e. our congregations.

Despite the generosity of many, which has provided £231,000 of the money raised to date, we do not feel that we have the whole-hearted support of all our parishioners.

If we look at general giving, the £139,000 was contributed by 124 people, donating more than £50.  It is estimated that 100 contributors are members of our congregations. 13 people have signed up to the “Sponsor an organ part” scheme. The phased donations are by 30 people.

The Dean suggested at the January meeting, that if all members of our congregations committed to a fairly modest amount per week (gift aided) over the next two to three years, we would be well on the way to meeting our target.

For example:- £5 per week equals £260 each year.

For a taxpayer this could add another £72 to the Fund

Over 3 years - the length of time it will take to build the Organ, this amounts to £996.

During the course of each week we have over 400 people attending services.

If each of the 400 were to give £5 per week for the next 3 years this would raise £398,000.

We will continue to seek funding wherever this may be found.  For example, we are now targeting businesses in Cardiff, we have just had the Howells Schools concerts, and we have the Llandaff Festival and the 2010 Flower Festival to come; also general fund raising events by Cathedral groups and individuals will continue.  Apart from the money raised, these help to keep the project alive and “in the public eye”.

We do however suggest, that the time has come for everyone to throw their weight wholeheartedly behind the major effort which will be needed if we are to succeed.
