LLANDAFF
FESTIVAL Report
"A Llandaff Festival to be Proud of"
After a
silence of twenty two years the revived Llandaff Festival from June 9th – 15th
was very successful. I am grateful for the many letters, cards and messages
from so many people who attended and thoroughly enjoyed the week. Someone asked
me how we planned the Festival and if I am being wholly honest, I can only say
that I
don’t know!
About a year ago I knew the programmes I wanted and the soloists and the Royal
College of Music and Drama responded enthusiastically. I am grateful to them
giving their time and talents to the organ appeal which was the main aim and
purpose, but also to the opportunities that the Festival gave to the many
young performers. The pianist, for example, was asked to perform at a concert
in Northampton by someone who visited the Festival.
There was a meeting in March when over 35 people attended with 15 apologies
from people who couldn’t attend the meeting but were willing to give their
support to the Festival. The success of the week must go to a group of people
who met once and then got on with the job with enthusiasm and efficiency.
My thanks to:

Along with
them, the three vergers Ian, David and Jonathan, the men’s working party who
made the bar, Janice Ford, Dianne Bartley and the Flower Guild for their
wonderful decoration, and the many volunteers who helped. It was a real team
effort.
The Concerts were all of a high standard and well attended by so many people
who supported the Festival. The Festival Club was an attractive feature,
where visitors could meet the artists with some excellent food and drinks.
The Service of Thanksgiving sung by the Cathedral Choir with the Champagne and
Canapés lunch that followed was a grand FINALE to a very successful week which
raised over £8,000 towards the organ appeal with some added expenses. So many
people were very generous, and if we didn’t raise a penny the whole week was
worth it in the enjoyment that it gave to so many people.
Lastly, along with so many people who helped with the week I must thank
Kathryn Burgess who designed and type set the concert programmes each night,
and Anna Morrell who did so much work with Adam Poole in the Press reports and
the contacts we had with the Press, Radio Wales, Classic FM and Radio 3.
As the success of all the efforts became widely known it is certain that so
many people are looking forward to next year.
